Apostille Services in
Chennai

Chennai has a long-standing outbound corridor to Singapore and the Gulf, and that makes the destination question unusually important here. Singapore is a Hague Convention party and takes an apostille. The UAE, Qatar and Kuwait are not, and an apostille is worthless for them. Getting that distinction right before you pay is the single most useful thing this page can do.

Worth knowing first

There is no apostille office in Chennai — or anywhere else.

An apostille is issued by the Ministry of External Affairs and by nobody else, and the MEA acceptsno document directly from an individual. Collection is handled through a small number of MEA-authorised agencies. Every "apostille centre" advertising in Chennai is routing your document through one of those channels. So do we — we just show you the price without a form first.

Home Department — the slower alternative to the SDM

10–20+ days, against 3–7 through the SDM. We use it only where a destination or receiving institution requires it.

  • Birth and death certificates for the city are issued by the Greater Chennai Corporation through its zonal offices. Certificates from the surrounding municipalities and town panchayats in the wider metropolitan area are equally valid for apostille.

  • The Tamil Nadu Home Department at Fort St George is the alternative to the SDM route for Tamil Nadu-issued documents, at 10–20+ days against 3–7. We use it only where a destination or receiving institution specifically requires it.

  • Chennai's outbound mix makes the Hague question sharper than in most cities. Singapore (in force 16 September 2021) and Malaysia are commonly assumed to be equivalent — they are not. Singapore takes an apostille; Malaysia is not a Contracting Party and needs embassy attestation. The same split runs through the Gulf: Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia are members, while the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait are not.

  • Certificates issued in Tamil are routine outside the corporation areas. Apostillable as issued, but most European and several Asian destinations will require a certified translation alongside.

Getting Your Document To Us

How Chennai Orders Actually Work

We do not have an office in Chennai and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Documents travel by tracked courier — you send the original to us, we handle notarisation where it is needed, the SDM stage and the MEA deposit, and the apostilled original comes back to your address. Every hand-off is photographed and you get the scan the day the sticker is issued.

Courier is charged at what it actually costs and quoted before you pay — it is not bundled into the ₹2,100 and it is not marked up.

Before you order

An apostille only works for Hague Convention countries.

130 Contracting Parties as of 30 June 2026. The UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Malaysia, Iraq and Iran are not among them — those need embassy attestation, and an apostille will be rejected. Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia are members, which is where most people get the Gulf wrong.

FAQ

Apostille in Chennai — Common Questions

Is an apostille valid for the UAE or Malaysia from Chennai?

No. Neither the UAE nor Malaysia is a Hague Convention Contracting Party, so an apostille has no legal effect there — both need embassy attestation, which is a different and longer process. Singapore, by contrast, is a party and does take an apostille. Check your specific destination before ordering.

Which body issues a birth certificate in Chennai?

The Greater Chennai Corporation, through its zonal offices, for births registered within the city. Surrounding municipalities and town panchayats issue their own, and those are equally valid for apostille. A hospital certificate is not.

Do I need to go to an office in Chennai for an apostille?

No, and there is no office in Chennai that issues apostilles in any case. Only the MEA does, and it accepts nothing directly from individuals. You courier the original to us and the apostilled document comes back to your address.

How much does apostille cost in Chennai?

₹2,100 per document, all-in, plus courier at actual cost. The ₹143 of government fees is included at cost and itemised on the page rather than folded into a single opaque number.
