Apostille Services in
Mumbai

Birth and death certificates in Mumbai come from the BMC, and the city generates a particular mix of apostille work — powers of attorney for property, experience and salary certificates for finance and shipping roles abroad, and marriage certificates for spouse visas. The route is the same as anywhere in India; what differs is which documents come up.

Worth knowing first

There is no apostille office in Mumbai — or anywhere else.

An apostille is issued by the Ministry of External Affairs and by nobody else, and the MEA acceptsno document directly from an individual. Collection is handled through a small number of MEA-authorised agencies. Every "apostille centre" advertising in Mumbai is routing your document through one of those channels. So do we — we just show you the price without a form first.

Home Department — the slower alternative to the SDM

10–20+ days, against 3–7 through the SDM. We use it only where a destination or receiving institution requires it.

  • Birth and death certificates for the city are issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation through its ward offices. Navi Mumbai, Thane and the surrounding municipal corporations register separately — a certificate from any of them is equally apostillable, because what the SDM verifies is the registering authority named on the document.

  • The Maharashtra Home Department sits at Mantralaya in Mumbai and is the alternative to the SDM route for Maharashtra-issued documents, at 10–20+ days against 3–7. Some destination countries and receiving institutions specifically require it, which is worth establishing before you order rather than after.

  • Mumbai generates a distinctive document mix. Powers of attorney for property transactions are unusually common here, and they are the one document where notarisation may not be enough — a registrable property transaction can require the instrument itself to be registered before a Sub-Registrar. Confirm with the registering office before executing it.

  • Marriage certificates issued in Maharashtra are frequently in Marathi. Perfectly valid for apostille, but almost every European destination will want a certified translation alongside — worth arranging at the same time rather than discovering it at the visa counter.

Getting Your Document To Us

How Mumbai Orders Actually Work

We do not have an office in Mumbai and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Documents travel by tracked courier — you send the original to us, we handle notarisation where it is needed, the SDM stage and the MEA deposit, and the apostilled original comes back to your address. Every hand-off is photographed and you get the scan the day the sticker is issued.

Courier is charged at what it actually costs and quoted before you pay — it is not bundled into the ₹2,100 and it is not marked up.

Before you order

An apostille only works for Hague Convention countries.

130 Contracting Parties as of 30 June 2026. The UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Malaysia, Iraq and Iran are not among them — those need embassy attestation, and an apostille will be rejected. Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia are members, which is where most people get the Gulf wrong.

FAQ

Apostille in Mumbai — Common Questions

Is there an MEA apostille office in Mumbai?

No. Apostilles are issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, and the MEA accepts no document directly from an individual anywhere in India. Any agency in Mumbai offering apostille is routing your document through an authorised collection channel, as we do.

Which body issues a birth certificate in Mumbai?

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), through its ward offices, for births registered within the city. Navi Mumbai, Thane and the neighbouring corporations issue their own, and those are equally valid for apostille. A hospital certificate is not a civil registration and cannot be apostilled.

Do I need to visit an office in Mumbai for the apostille?

No. You courier the original to us, we handle notarisation where it is needed, the SDM stage and the MEA deposit, and the apostilled original comes back to your address. We do not have a Mumbai office and we would rather say so than imply one.

What does apostille cost in Mumbai?

₹2,100 per document, all-in, plus courier at actual cost — the same everywhere in India. Government fees of ₹143 are included at cost and shown itemised.
