SDM Attestation for Apostille —
When You Need It and Why It's Faster
Personal documents can be pre-authenticated by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate or by the State Home Department. Same outcome, same price, same document — and a difference of two to four times in how long you wait. That is why we default to the SDM, and it is a choice we make on your behalf rather than a technicality buried in a footnote.

What Is an SDM, and What Does the Attestation Certify?
A Sub-Divisional Magistrate is a revenue and magisterial officer of the district administration, responsible for a sub-division within a district. For our purposes what matters is that the SDM is a recognised pre-authenticating authority for personal documents — the MEA accepts an SDM endorsement as the basis for issuing an apostille.
What the attestation actually certifies
For a government-issued certificate, that the authority named on it genuinely issued it. For a privately made document, that the Notary Public who attested it is genuine and the notarisation is recorded in their register. In both cases the SDM is vouching for the signature and authority, not for whether the contents are true.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. An apostilled affidavit is not an official endorsement of what you declared in it — it authenticates the chain of signatures behind the document. Receiving authorities abroad judge the content on its own merits.
SDM vs State Home Department
| SDM | State Home Department | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical time | 3–7 working days | 10–20+ working days |
| What it verifies | The issuing authority, or the notary who attested a private document | The same thing — the difference is the office, not the check |
| Documents accepted | Personal documents: birth, marriage, death, PCC, affidavit, PoA, divorce, domicile, medical, adoption, experience, ID copies | The same personal set |
| Our price | ₹2,100 per document | ₹2,100 per document — we do not charge more for the slower route |
| When it applies | Our default for every personal document | Where a destination country or receiving institution specifically requires it |
Note the price row. We do not charge more for the slower route, because it costs us no more — the difference is entirely in how long the office takes. Anyone charging a premium for "express SDM" is selling you a queue position they do not control.

When the SDM Route Is Not Enough
Some destination countries and some receiving institutions specifically require State Home Department attestation and will not accept an SDM endorsement. Where that applies and the document went through the SDM instead, the whole process runs again — new attestation, new apostille, new courier, and the deadline gone.
This is why we ask for the destination country and the receiving institution at intake rather than just the document. It is a thirty-second question that prevents the single most expensive failure in this process, and it is the kind of thing that gets skipped when a provider is optimising for a fast checkout.
If your case needs the Home Department, we will tell you before you pay — including that it will take 10–20+ days rather than 3–7. Selling you the fast route and letting you discover the problem at the other end is not a trade we are interested in making.
SDM Attestation by City
The SDM attests on the basis of the issuing authority named on your document, not on where you live — so a certificate from any state can go through the SDM route. We handle documents from anywhere in India by courier, with doorstep collection in Hyderabad where we are based.
SDM Attestation — Common Questions
What is SDM attestation?
SDM attestation is pre-authentication of a document by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate — a revenue and magisterial officer of the district administration. The SDM verifies that the document was genuinely issued by the authority named on it, or that the notary who attested it is genuine, and endorses it accordingly.
Do I need SDM attestation for apostille?
For personal documents, yes — either SDM attestation or State Home Department attestation. The MEA apostilles on the strength of a recognised pre-authentication and will not act on a document that has none. Since both routes are accepted, the practical question is which is faster, and that is the SDM.
What is the difference between MEA apostille and SDM attestation?
They are consecutive steps, not alternatives. SDM attestation is the pre-authentication that makes a document eligible for apostille; the MEA apostille is the final certificate that makes it valid abroad. A document with SDM attestation but no apostille will not be accepted in another country.
How long does SDM attestation take?
Typically 3–7 working days, against 10–20+ at the State Home Department. That 2–4× gap is the reason we route through the SDM by default. Total processing including the MEA stage is 3–7 working days, with courier transit on top.
Is SDM attestation valid for all countries?
SDM attestation is an internal Indian step, so the question is really whether the apostille that follows it is valid — and that depends on the destination being a Hague Convention party. What does vary is whether a particular destination or institution insists on Home Department attestation instead, which is worth checking before you order.
Is SDM attestation cheaper than the Home Department?
We charge the same either way. The difference that matters is time, not price — 3–7 days against 10–20+, for an identical outcome on the same document. If you have a deadline, that is the whole decision.
Can any SDM attest a document from another state?
The SDM attests on the basis of the issuing authority named on the document rather than on where you live, so a certificate issued in one state does not have to go back to that state for pre-authentication. That is why we can handle documents from anywhere in India by courier.
What happens if the SDM refuses to attest my document?
It is almost always a problem with the document rather than the process — a hospital birth certificate instead of a municipal one, a court copy without a seal, an employer letter with no letterhead. We check for these before you courier anything, which is why we ask for photos first.
